Respect for Ohio Wines Grows
July 31st, 2006
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio wine industry achieved confirmation of its place among accomplished wine-producing regions. Wine experts from North America judged Ohio wines against wines from Europe and California. In 10 match-ups, an Ohio wine was judged in a blind tasting against a top-tier wine of comparable type, age and climate conditions at the first-ever Ohio Wine Challenge in Mayfield Heights, Ohio, June 12. When the results were tallied, Ohio wines had proven their competitiveness, winning three and nearly tying in five of seven other comparisons. Ohio Wines vs. Other Wines Ravenhurst La Terre Riche Grand Cuvee, $35.00 - 60 points vs. Veuve Clicquot Champagne, France, $53.00 - 62.5 points 2005 Firelands Isle St. George Pinot Grigio, $10.00 - 52 points vs. 2004 Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio, Italy, $25.00 - 53 points 2004 Kinkead Ridge Ohio River Valley Viognier Roussanne, $15.00 - 51 points vs. 2003 Domaine du Vieux Lazaret Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, France, $25.00 - 49 points 2002 Markko Lake Erie Reserve Chardonnay, $36.00 - 59 points vs. 2002 Vincent Girardin Chassagne Montrachet, $69.00 - 63 points 2005 Ferrante Golden Bunches Grand River Valley Dry Riesling, $15.00 - 65 points vs. 2004 Lietz Dragonstone Riesling Rheingau, Germany, $16.00 - 38 points 2005 Ferrante Grand River Valley Riesling, $13.00 - 59 points vs. 2003 Joh. Prum Sonnenuhr Spatlese, Germany, $16.00 - 59.5 points 2002 St. Joseph's Grand River Valley Pinot Noir Reserve, $24.00 - 52 points vs. 2003 Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges les Chenes Carteaux, $65.00 - 58 points 2001 Busch-Harris Ohio Cabernet Sauvignon, $21.00 - 67 points vs. 2003 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Artemis Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, $51.00 - 65 points 2002 Valley Vineyards Ohio River Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, $22.00 - 46 points vs. 2002 Hess Collection Napa Valley, Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, $39.00 - 70 points 2004 St. Joseph's Grand River Valley Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, $28.00 - 66.5 points vs. 2004 Inniskillin Vidal Blanc Ice Wine, Canada, $40.00 - 69.5 points “The competition pairings were right on the money in terms of varietals, topicity and vintage,” said Jerald O’Kennard, director of the Beverage Tasting Institute in Chicago. “Ohio has something very good going on in terms of commercial appeal and potential for sales. The quality of Ohio wines is there and it’s just waiting for people to discover.” Agricultural officials were pleased with the results and the competition’s integrity. “Our wines have achieved a level of quality where we’re ready to compete against wines from around the world. The results show that we do indeed have comparable quality,” said Fred L. Dailey, Director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture. Director Dailey noted that Ohio wines provide not only high quality, but high value. The total price tag for the 10 Ohio wines was $219, while the competitor wines cost $427. The highly credentialed judges represented key areas of the wine industry, including restaurants, distributors, winemakers and aficionados. They were: Matthew Citriglia, a Master Sommelier and fine wine sales director for an Ohio wine wholesaler; David McMahon, wine director and sommelier for Jason’s, a Columbus restaurant; O’Kennard of the Beverage Tasting Institute; and Sue-Ann Staff, winemaker for Pillitteri Estate Winery in Ontario, Canada. One Ohio winery now has multiple reasons to celebrate. At the 25th Riverside International Wine Competition in California this May, where more than 3,000 wines were judged, the 2005 Grand River Valley Golden Bunches, a dry Riesling from Ferrante Winery in Geneva, Ohio, was named best overall white wine. Monday, it bested the 2004 Lietz Dragonstone Riesling, Rheingau, Germany. |
