Ohio Wine Takes Top Honors at American Fine Wine Competition in Florida

Florida is not a State that comes up when you talk about wine. Florida does not produce any wine in a meaningful way. But those who have been to Florida will agree with me that in places like Miami or West Palm Beach, to name a few, you can drink excellent wine. So, it should not come as a surprise that Florida hosts the Annual American Fine Wine Competition (AFWC). In January of this year, the third AFWC took place. After two days of swirling and sipping more than 500 American-produced wines, the results are now in. The winners are two wines from California and Ohio.
Best Red Wine - 2007 Cabernet Franc from Turnbull in Napa Valley, California.
Best White Wine - 2008 Pinot Gris from Ferrante Winery in Grand River Valley.
The judges awarded more than 40 Double Gold medal winners. Double Gold medals were awarded only when all judges on the panel of four thought the wine was worthy of a gold medal, thereby moving it into the “best of show” category, where all 20 judges decided the final winner.
All of the wines from the competition can be tasted at the Gala Dinner on March 13th at the Lincoln Culinary Institute. The Gala Dinner will also feature a five-course dinner prepared by some of South Florida’s most revered chefs: Cindy Hutson of Ortanique on the Mile, Oliver Saucy of Café Maxx, Johnny Vinczencz of Johnny V Restaurant, Michael Wagner of Lola’s on Harrison and Juan Velasquez of Paradiso Restaurant.
