The Ohio Quality Wine Program was established by the Ohio Grape Industries Committee and the Ohio State University Agricultural Research and Development Center's Viticulture and Enology Programs to establish a rating system based on industry standards to identify the best estate-grown wines in Ohio. The wines that meet or exceed these criteria are designated as Ohio Quality Wines. A seal of distinction creates awareness of Ohio Quality Wines with the consumer while promoting the best of the Ohio wine industry.
Estate-grown Ohio wines are made with at least 90% grapes grown in Ohio and include vinifera and hybrid varieties.
Not at this time. With more than 1,500 acres of grapes in the state, there are still not enough wine grapes to satisfy the needs of Ohio winemakers. The Ohio Quality Wine Program may spur investment in new vineyards in Ohio with high quality wine grapes.
The wines that meet the criteria for high quality will be allowed to use identifiers on the bottle, on marketing materials, and in promotion. Some wine consumers have not yet learned about the new modern Ohio wine industry. The Ohio Quality Wine Program should encourage consumers to try Ohio wines.
Ohio is a unique wine-growing region with nuances of flavor and bouquet specific to Ohio's viticulture areas. This program will help consumers develop an appreciation for quality wines that are produced on Ohio soil.
